On a cold wet Sunday morning the boys turned up with the usual enthusiasm. Bushey who played some excellent one touch football started the game. Our lads were put on the back foot. Bushey struck first scoring a very well deserved goal around five minutes into the match. The Reds raised their game in response and got on even pegging within a few minutes. Bushey wrestled the ball from Terry Piper and attempted to clear the ball down pitch. The ball was picked up by Shaun Costigan who played a long pass to Jamie Jewell at the far post. Jamie received the ball well and made the score 1-1. The teams were well matched but the Reds seemed stronger in mid field, which made the difference. Just before half time the Reds got a corner. Jamie took the corner using a system practised at training, the ball landed around the penalty spot and was put away by Terry Piper to make the score 2-1.

The second half was as competitive as the first. The Bushey Hawks game was orchestrated by their captain, a delicate looking blonde girl who was capable of delivering some crunching tackles. Our defence held solid, Gareth Williams and Martin Regan protected Connor Smith in goal.

The game was the most enjoyable so far this year, not just because the result was in our favour but the teams were evenly matched and played the entire game spirit.

Nascot started well attacking Everett and getting off to a flying start following a goal mouth scramble Kaine Grist was on hand at the post to put the Reds a goal ahead within the first five minutes. The remainder of the first half was spent in our opponent’s half-only to be foiled by the goalkeeper who seemed to get his body to everything that headed his way. A shot from Jamie Jewell swept past the keeper hit the inside of the post and rolled along the line or was it across. The referee allowed play to continue and the ball was cleared. The first half finished 0 –1 to the Reds.

The second half continued with full attack from the Reds once again being kept out by an athletic keeper. With five minutes to go Everett got a corner, it was partially cleared to the edge of the penalty box, our lads were caught ball watching while the ball was slipped in at the near post. The game finished a disappointing 1-1

Nascot Reds got off to a flying start by quickly scoring a couple of goals against our opponents in the first ten minutes. The first coming from Harry Whitehead followed by the second from Kaine Grist. Harvester East where overrun and did well to keep the score down to 4-0 at half time. The second two goals coming from Harry to complete a hat trick.

The second half was much of the same although a number of changes in our team up set the flow of our game. The last of our goals came from Terry Piper who clipped in a neat shot from a deflection.

The major plus taken from the game was the one touch passing skills the team are developing through mid-field and starting to play the ball in to wide positions progressing up the pitch. The team also showed glimmers of positional sense that makes the work put into the team by a number of people in our group all work while.

Following a very slow start in the qualifying rounds we were placed in the yellow division along with some familiar teams such as Everett Black, Harvester East and Bushey Hawks. Not to mention our new arch rivals Oxhey Jets, based in our home estate of South Oxhey and managed by Gary Porter.

Our first game was away to Borehamwood Hearts. We have not played the Hearts before and did not know what to expect. We started the match aggressively and spent the first half mainly in our opponent’s territory. Hearts defended very well and held out despite a great corner by Jamie Jewell which rolled the length of the cross bar before dropping out of play. Another shot from outside the area from Shaun Costigan hit the inside of the post and rolled along the line before being cleared.

The second half started in similar fashion. Harry Whitehead had the bit between his teeth and had no intention of letting the opposition off the hook. A number of breaks were defended well stopping Harry, Terry Piper and Kaine Grist from opening the scoring.  The break through came in the last five minutes of full time, Harry was put through by A Dev Sampat clearance, and he ran from the half way line and planted the ball firmly in the back of the net.

At this point the real match started, our lads showed how they are maturing into the game by successfully defending the lead right through the ten minutes extra time. The boys played as a team rather than individuals, which really made the difference.

Well done Reds.

Forth Qualifier match – 10/10/04

Kaine Grist

The team got off to a dismal start with Hemel taking a lead in the first 5 minutes. These goals were followed sharply by a second and third. There was very little positive to say about the first 20 minutes, we were please to see the half time whistle blow.

Following a team talk and four changes at the interval wake up call, the team started more aggressively in the second half. The defence was stable and our attack more energetic. The second half could have went either way.

The next game to at home to Borehamwood Diamonds.

The boys were not looking forward to this game, as they were aware that Gadeside Gunners are a very good side. Before the game the Reds were briefed on the game strategy with the defensive players warmed up for a hard match.

The boys started very encouragingly, attacking the Gunners with confidence and holding them in their half. All the initial fears were put aside as the game could have went either way at this stage. The defensive partnership of Jamie Jewell, Martin Regan and Shaun Costigan kept the gunners as bay and limited them to a few long-range shots. The first half finished 0 – 0 a respectable score line considering we played this team a year ago and got thumped 9 – 0.

A number of changes were made at halftime to allow all the squad to play a part in the game. The second half got off reasonable well until a long range shot was saved by Connor Smith in goal only to be followed up and put us a goal down. The boys continued to battle on but obviously dishearten by the goal. The matched finished 3 – 0 to Gadeside Gunners but any memories of the first games 9 – 0 thrashing have been expelled and we will be even better prepared for our next match.

The match was played in good spirit by both sides and refereed fairly. I wish the Gunners well for the rest of the season.

Second Qualifier match - 26/09/04

Everett Ambre 3 - Nascot Wood Rangers Reds 2

Team

Connor Smith (Goal Keeper)

Shaun Costigan

Martin Regan

Jamie Jewell

Gareth Williams

Dev Sampat

Terry Piper

Kaine Grist

Harry Whitehead

The game got off to a competitive start with both teams going for goal and defending well. Everett had the best chances of the half and spent the majority of the twenty minutes in our area. All our lads soaked up the pressure and kept the shots out of the net. Connor Smith made some heroic saves constantly brushing aside any knocks and bruises that he picked up on the way. The first half finished all square 0 – 0.

Nascot Reds got off to a flyer in the second half with a goal scored by Terry Piper following a dynamic run along the right wing by Harry Whitehead. The opposition heads dropped which allowed a second, once again set up by Harry Whitehead but scored by Kaine Grist with precision accuracy. This is Kaine’s first goal for the team but I am no doubt, it won’t be his last. With nine minutes to go Nascot were 2 – 0 up and looking good until Everett got a goal from a corner, which somehow sneaked in. This left us with a game on our hands and Everett with their tails up and pounding us from all sides. The second came for Everett following a defensive mix up and a third in the last minute.

Its got to be said “well done Everett” although the parents of the winning team were not so sporting when Everett were losing, a shame about the foul language and general aggressive behaviour.

Looking forward to meeting Gadeside Gunners next Sunday.

COME ON NASCOT REDS WE’RE BETTER THAN THIS.

First Qualifier match - 19/09/04

Strides – 1

The season kicked off to an encouraging start despite losing by a single goal. The boys are holding their positions on the pitch and passing the ball with increasing fluency. Strides made the better start to the game and spent a lot of the first half attacking our goal. Nascot defended well and limited the opposition to a few shots, which were saved by our ever-improving goalkeeper Connor Smith. The first half finished all square 0-0.

After a few player changes at half time we got off to a better start once again defending well but making a number of excellent breaks, putting Strides on the back foot. It turned out to be one of those days when the ball was not going to go into the net for us. Strides eventually got the break they needed from the half way line and scored the only goal of the game. Nevertheless, the team has shown improvements on last season and developing into a good team. Strides will not be a push over for anyone this year, they proved to be strong, game challengers. Hopefully we will get another chance to take them on later this year.

The next game is away to Everett Amber.
