|5/11/06||NWR U8 Hawks 2 Oxhey Jets 2||Nicolas Cortes, Sam Waller|
With a full team this week and Jamie promising to be back on Sunday we faced Oxhey Jets, our nearest and dearest rivals in good spirits.
The game got off to a slow start with both sides cancelling each other out in a midfield battle. But playing down the slope we started to push on and won a couple of corners which were dealt with well by the Oxhey defence. Then with Nicolas Cortes chasing a ball into their box which looked like a lost cause, he managed to squeeze a foot between two defenders and stuck the ball into the net, much to the surprise of their keeper and large visiting support. But within five minutes we gave away two very soft goals and found ourselves trailing 2-1 at half-time, this despite Sam H and Luke snuffing out all of Oxhey’s other attacking moves.
The game really sprung to life in the second half and both teams played some excellent football. We started to turn the screw and forced several corners, one of which was nearly turned in by Robbie. It looked like it wasn’t going to be our day, when a good passing move involving Oliver V gave Sam Waller the chance to run through on goal from just inside the oppo’s half, he headed towards goal from the right of the pitch and cracked a super shot passed the approaching goalie into the net.
In the dying
seconds a huge kick from the Oxhey keeper bounced against our post and
Oliver managed to grab it before it crossed the line, just the luck he
deserved as he had none in the first half. Final score 2-2 a fair result
on the day.
|29/10/06||Omonia 3 NWR U8 Hawks 0|
“We only had Six men, we only had Six men” was the cry from the terraces as the super battling Hawks went down three nil to Omonia.
Yes despite only having six players available the boys gave an excellent display against Omonia. With Jamie still recovering from a broken arm and Nicolas Cortes sipping cocktails in Florida it was left to the Super six, to fight the cause. We got off to a good start knocking the ball around and it looked that we might get something from the game. Unfortunately we lost a goal when a nippy forward managed to skip past a couple of challenges and planted the ball past Oliver in goal. To be fair the boys could have dropped their heads, but no, they got straight back at Omonia and had most of the play without creating a clear cut chance.
In the second half playing up-hill we again took the game to Omonia. Sam Waller and man of the match, Luke Wilson in particular gave everything, Robbie and Oliver chased back and Sam H was effective in defence. Towards the end of the game our inability to clear the ball from our area resulted in two more soft goals being conceded. Even then we never gave up and pushed the oppo all the way.
I must just add that Oliver in goal was outstanding, his bravery and handling the best I’ve seen in two years.
|22/10/06||NWR U8 Hawks 3 Croxley Guild Reds 1||Sam Waller (2) Robbie Tocher|
last qualifying game was played at the Cricket Club against Croxley Guild
Reds. The boys got off to an excellent start by winning the toss! Unfortunately
Robbie failed to grasp the advantage and chose to kick off rather than
play up-hill first half (that boy will never learn).
The real stuff starts
next week with the league games…….good luck boys. Eric & Simon.
|15/10/06||NWR U8 Hawks 4 Oxhey United 1||Oliver Verlander, Nick Cortes, Sam Waller (2)|
Nascot U8 Hawks started out with a strong attack with an early ball from Sam Waller across the goal mouth which flew just out of the reach of our two forwards Robbie Tocher and Oliver Verlander. This was not to be the last of these ball supplied by Sam and with the continual pressure Robbie hit the post but Oliver Verlander was set for the rebound which he put away with ease to put Nascot in front. Oxhey fought back and before half time posted one into the Nascot net to make it 1-1 at the break. Nascot came out into the second half eager to win the game and we were soon in front again thanks to the feet of Nick Cortes who threaded the ball through a gap in the Oxhey defence into the corner of the goal. Nascot continued the pressure which led to a free kick which was struck well by Sam Waller to get him onto the score card. but Sam was not going to stop there, he weaved the ball across the penalty area before planting the ball in the top corner to leave the final score line at 4-1 to Nascot.
A good performance by the team showing good use of the width of the pitch and passing.
|8/10/06||Bushey Rangers 0 NWR U8 Hawks 1||Luke Wilson|
a weekend of football highs and lows, with a dreadful England performance
and a historic Scottish victory over the French I was sky high! Only to
be brought down to earth with the news that one of our squad Jamie Jerred
had broken his arm whilst out playing on Saturday afternoon. Despite this
he still turned up on Sunday morning to cheer the boys on, we all wish him
well and a speedy recovery.
Well back to the game, we lined up with the seven fit players available and made a good start against a well organised Bushey Rangers side, cheered on by a large but good humoured crowd. Playing up the slope in the first half the boys passed the ball well and created several chances, but found the attempts either going wide of straight into the keeper’s hands. The highlight of the first half though was an excellent one handed save from Oliver Cox, which was all the better considering it was the first time he’d touched the ball in nearly an hour of competitive football.
At half time I told the boys the game was there to be won and I expected us to win by a couple of goals. Straight from the off we went on the attack and continued to do so for the rest of the half. Oliver Verlander had two one on ones which the keeper managed to block, Sam Waller had two fantastic long range shots saved by the impressive Bushey Goalie and Robbie Tocher nearly converted an excellent cross from Nick. The goal came mid-way through the second half, following a corner the ball came out to Luke on the edge of the area; a sweetly struck shot into the corner gave the keeper no chance. We continued to dominate the game which was interrupted continuously to `injuries’ to the opposition, they seemed to love the water spray being administered by their Manager! (I’m definitely not getting one).
On the odd occasion Bushey managed to get forward Sam and Luke as always were solid at the back making several timely challenges.
Right at the death, a Bushey forward found himself clear in the area, only to be thwarted by Oliver who rushed from his line to block and clear. Another excellent team performance against good opposition.
|1/10/06||Nascot Wood Rangers Hawks 5 Pinnacle 0||Oliver Verlander, Own Goal, Nick Cortes, Luke Wilson & Robbie Tocher.|
| Nascot U8 Hawks put out a good
performance to get their first win of the qualifiers, 5-0 against Pinnacle.
The first half saw Nascot Wood spending most of the time in the opposition’s
half firing shots at the goal. It was only to be a matter of time before
Oliver Verlander planted the ball in the back of the net, which brought
the score to 1-0 at half time. Nascot Wood once again looked to increase
their lead and after a repeated number of attacks pressurised the Pinnacle
team into an own goal. Nascot kept up the attack leading to Nick Cortes
on the left hand side putting in the goal for a third. Still the play was
all in the Pinnacle half and after the ball being cleared part way Luke
Wilson hammered the ball home. Robbie Tocher’s hard work in front of the
goal eventually paid off with him putting the 5th in the corner of the net.
A good performance from the whole team.
|24/9/06||Hemel Athletic 1 NWR under 8 Hawks 0|
Our first competitive game ended in a narrow defeat. We played against a very good Hemel side on a large pitch with glorious blue skies above.
Sam Harris deputising for Oliver Cox in goal made a couple of terrific stops in the first half other than that NWR’s had most of the possession and played some very slick football. Oliver Verlander was a constant threat with his running and dribbling with the ball, Sam Waller on the right of midfield was involved throughout with excellent passing, corners and a sweetly struck free kick which just missed the target. Jamie Gerred on the left side did some fantastic chasing back and one run forward ended up with a pass to Robbie Tocher who beat his defender and crashed his left foot shot against a post.
At the back Luke Wilson won all his tackles and cleared with aplomb, Nick Cortes alongside him made some fantastic interventions and his distribution was superb.
In the second half the Sam’s swapped goalkeeping responsibilities, Sam Harris moved into defence and Nick pushed into midfield. We continued to press forward and created lots of half chances but couldn’t quite find the net. We conceded a goal with about ten minutes left, a scramble in the penalty area and a good shot left Sam W with no chance.
We continued to play most of the football and had another good chance when Nick hit an excellent free kick just wide. Despite the result it was a great team performance, well done boys.
